The firing of the top military officer on the ground in Afghanistan will not change the mission of Marine forces in the central Asian country at this time, Lt. Gen. Dennis Hejlik, the commander of the II Marine Expeditionary Force, said May 12.rn"With the change in command structure yesterday, there will not be a mission change for us as of last night," Hejlik said at a breakfast meeting with reporters in Washington. "There [has been] no change to our mission set as we see it right now."rnOn May 11, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced that Army Gen. David McKiernan, the commander of the International Security Assistance Force and U.S. Forces Afghanistan, would be replaced by Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal. McChrystal, the director of the Joint Staff, is the former head of Joint Special Operations Command.
