STUDY REVEALS CONTINUING WEAKNESS IN THE US DOMESTIC AIR FREIGHT/EXPRESS INDUSTRY

Revenues for the US domestic air freight and express industry totaled $31.88 billion in 2008, down about 3% from the record revenues recorded by market participants in the prior year. The slim decline was impacted in a positive way by high fuel surcharges in 2008, which mask the fact that traffic volumes declined by nearly 10%. Not surprisingly, the full-year 2008 results showed a significant decline in the second half of the year, following a period of modest year-over-year gains in the first half. The drop in 2008 was felt across the full spectrum of industry participants, with significant declines in both the express and general freight components.
