That screeching noise you may have heard the past year or so isn't the sound of some throwback to the old information super highway trying to connect to the Internet via a dial-up modem. Rather, it's been calls by mobile telco players for a high-speed interface for the SIM card. The analogy is apt since many SIM cards still communicate with handsets at no more than 56 kilobits per second, the speed of many a telephone modem. Some SEVIs can top 100 kbps, but that still leaves them-and smart cards in general-far behind in a world of broadband networks and IT devices that pass data back and forth by the megabit.
