Dare to be different VW Beetle

With the very last Beetle having rolled off Volkswagen's production line in Pueblo, Mexico during July 2019, pundits are already naming it as a likely future classic. Of course it was a vastly different animal (or should we say insect?) from its wheezy, air-cooled namesake, and indeed it changed quite a bit in the period between its debut in 1998 and the arrival of the third-generation model in 2011. Nevertheless, throughout its two-decade production lifespan, one thing stayed constant; it was fun, mostly reliable and always a refreshing change from the usual humdrum small-family car choices.
