Disc Brakes

As a brake's primary function is to turn motion energy into heat, the enclosed nature of drum brake designs mean that they reach a temperature saturation point fairly quickly, causing the braking effort to fade and disappear. Cooling, however, was improved considerably, by designing the friction parts to be more exposed to the airstream. It is no coincidence, therefore, that disc brakes' first successful application on WWII bombers enabled the heavy fighter planes to reach a post-landing standstill in a reasonable distance.
