The 626, along with the likes of the Toyota Avensis and Nissan Primera, has often been dubbed The Japanese Mondeo', which instantly pigeon-holed it as being dull but worthy. Yet underneath that inauspicious body lurks a seriously capable workhorse that's roomy, fabulously kitted out and actually a lot classier than some of its rivals. Replacing its less refined predecessor in 1999, there was a facelift in early 2000, but even Mazda anoraks would be hard pushed to spot the changes. For the record, itgained the new corporate grille and redesigned rear lights, but that's about it. Buyers could choose between the saloon, versatile hatch and commodious estate versions - the latter two obviously being the best choices in terms of practicality.
