Lode of helpfulness

In response to 'Lode of annoyance', a letter published in August's edition of Canal Boat, I would like to give my view on the lock at Salters Lode.rnHaving just purchased a narrowboat which is currently moored at Earith, I was interested in reading the letter as after studying a Fenland map it became obvious that this lock is the only one that gives access to the Middle LevelrnNavigation System and hence access to BW canal system via the River Nene. Not being familiar yet with the Fenland network I could see that it might be possible to gain access to the Middle Level by going up the Old Bedford River and then through the Welches Dam Lock.
