The BCN marathon challenge event returned after an absence of seven years. And it certainly lived up to its name, with several boats finding some of the less well-used parts of the Birmingham Canal Navigations network quite a challenge.rnThe event has a new organiser: the BCN Society has taken up the reins following the retirement of the IWA / WRG volunteers who masterminded it from 1993 to 2002. But the aims remain the same: for the participants, to clock up the most points by cruising as many miles and locks as they can in 24 hours out of a 30-hour period - with the scoring weighted so that the more obscure corners of the system earn the most. And for the event itself, to raise the profile of the BCN, encourage boats onto its less-used parts, and highlight any problem lengths.
