Escape to the Ashby

The wandering rural cul-de-sac that is today's Ashby Canal is what remains of a plan to connect the Coventry Canal to the River Trent at Burton. Like many ambitious canal schemes at the time it failed to reach its ultimate destination for financial reasons. In fact it didn't even reach the town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch which gives the canal its name. That's not to say the Ashby was a failure: the 30-mile cut from Marston to Moira which was opened in 1804 provided an important transport link for the Leicestershire coalfields.
