FAULT-FINDING? FIND A MINI MECHANIC...

After cruising for about 50 minutes to an hour the BMC Vedette 950 OHV petrol engine in my Freeman 22 Mk1 starts to misfire. If I put her into neutral and handle the gear gently I can keep her running and she will rev up, but as soon as I engage gear she misfires and eventually stops. If I wait for about 30 minutes she will restart and run for about 20 minutes then the problem starts all over again. She can be difficult to restart during this time, but with a lot of throttle she will fire, kick out smoke from the exhaust and then settle down. The points, rotor arm, plugs and coil have been replaced. The fuel tank breather is clear. Any ideas?
