Fairy lace, gypsy's umbrella, Queen Anne's lace - they all sound much prettier than the more prosaic cow parsley, and aptly suit the froth of small white, scented flowers growing along the hedgerow. Cow parsley is one of the mosl common and delicate-looking members of the parsley family, and the first to flower in the spring. A biennial, it takes two years to flower from seed: roots and the large fern-like leaves grow in the first year; tall, hollow stems branching to produce umbels (umbrella-like clusters) of small white flowers follow in April to June of the second year.
