Sharing the canal network

I Want To Thank Steve Hayward for his most recent article entitled 'Perhaps people should live on canals' (CB, Nov). My partner and I are just about to tentatively live on the canal network. We belong to a younger demographic (37 and 38 respectively) in 'waterways' terms and found Steve's comments to be bang on the money. We find ourselves in a situation of ever increasing rent and a total lack of security in the more traditional world of bricks and mortar. We are not considering a life afloat as a cheaper alternative, more an opportunity to share in (and contribute towards) all that is good about our canal network. We both have a huge appreciation of our canal heritage and are members of our local canal society (BCNS).
