Waterways lose special protection

The Government Has refused to amend a bill to retain protection of waterways land from compulsory purchase for development - but says the change won't harm the canals. Under the Growth & Infrastructure Bill, two types of land (open space and land held by statutory undertakers) lose special safeguards controlling compulsory purchase - but a third type, National Trust land, retains these controls. The Canal & River Trust and the Inland Waterways Association believe there is no rational argument for CRT waterways (which fall into the first two categories) to lose their protection while National Trust waterways retain it.
