£4m more for winter work

Thanks to better than expected financial results and the absence of any major calls on its contingency funds this year, the Canal & River Trust is putting an extra £4m into its winter work programme - with £2m of this to go on offside vegetation clearance. The Trust puts £2m aside annually in case of emergency work needed - for example repairs to last year's breach on the Trent & Mersey Canal. If by late autumn it is apparent that this isn't going to be needed, it is released for other work over the winter stoppage programme.
