...As Aylesbury and the Leeds & Liverpool open

Two emergency stoppages were due to end in late November, with both the Leeds & Liverpool and Grand Union Aylesbury Arm scheduled to open by the end of the month. On the Leeds & Liverpool at Rishton the canal bed and towpath have been reinstated where they were washed out by leakage into a culvert carrying a stream under the canal. The canal bed has been re-lined with traditional puddled clay, the puddle protected by a layer of stone, and the only remaining work as we went to press was installation of the new culvert liner and surfacing of the towpath. Reopening was expected on 25 November.
