I recently decided I'd like to give narrowboating a serious go - with a view to getting my own boat. But how would I know if we would really like it? I know that everyone says "book a hire boat for a few days", but that can be tricky in the off-season and, even if it's possible, can be quite pricey. Leafing through your magazine, we saw a one-day Have-a-Go Cruise advertised for November 2014 with the Truman Enterprise Narrowboat Trust (TENT), on the Staffs & Worcs near Wolverhampton. Unfortunately, it was fully booked but we put our names down for one in March 2015. So on 28 March, with four other 'newbies', my 19-year-old son Luke and I had a full day out on the 70ft nb A J Felgate, learning a bit of boat handling, how to work locks safely, winding and reversing - and otherwise completely enjoying ourselves. All this was for the princely sum of £15 per person.
