摘要

Canal books. Do you read them? Do you collect them? You probably do; I certainly have a small collection tucked away on my bookshelves. And yet, sacrilegious as it might sound, I don't find a lot of them awfully satisfying. I mean, let's be frank, once you've read a couple of 'history of the canal system' volumes, you've pretty much got the picture. Nor am I one for the 'my life on the waterways' titles -which crop up with increasing frequency these days given the ease of self-publishing and instant e-books. Most tell a tale which is pretty similar to our own and, frankly, don't have the writing to lift them from the leaden pages.
