Liberal democrat peer and waterways supporter Lord German has become the first member of the House of Lords to be recognised by the Inland Waterways Association as its Parliamentarian of the Year. Before becoming a Lord in 2010, he was a member of the Welsh Assembly for 11 years, served as its Deputy First Minister, and was leader of the Welsh LimDems. He is also honorary President of the Monmouthshire Brecon & Abergavenny Canals Trust, which is working to restore the abandoned southern lengths of the canal.
