You might think of flying boats as that interesting but sadly almost extinct form of transport, an aeroplane with a boat hull that takes off and lands on water. But the name seems to have reappeared as the latest new form of water-based transport, which - like the hydrofoil before it - uses underwater 'wings' to lift its hull to 'fly' above the water.First there was the silent electric Candela C7 speedboat, flying at 30 knots across the Venice lagoon at a recent test, and (importantly) "it doesn't create harmful wakes" - unlike the city's water taxis. Next came the Bubblefly Jet and Bubblefly Liner - the former an exotic looking "private high performance vehicle", the later more of a flying water minibus. It's due to enter service in St Tropez next year, then it might be heading our way.
