CHARGING AHEAD...

Looking back I can't believe that this will be our third winter on the Cut. We sold our house in January 2018 and bought our boat in March of that year. Whilst we were looking for our boat, we lived in a caravan that we had borrowed from friends and moved around campsites in the Wiltshire area. We sold most of our possessions or gave them to charity shops. What we decided to keep, we put into storage, for when we bought our boat. Our caravan was very basic but we were excited about our new journey. We eventually found our boat, Pendle, at Devizes Marina and moved onto her in the middle of the Beast from the East, one of the coldest times in the UK for many years. My mum quickly had to learn how to use our stove to keep us warm. Lighting and maintaining a fire in an acquired but important skill for a boater. We don't really count that as our first winter as we only had really cold weather for a short time and we were in a Marina, waiting to get work done on our boat. I was only 11 and I loved all the snow. Sadly, for me, that was the last thick snow I experienced. Since then, apart from very thin sprinklings of snow, I have yet to experience a proper snowy winter on the Cut. I appreciate for adults, snow and ice brings with it lots of practical problems. But for a child, snow is magical and I have yet to build a towpath snowman.
