HUDDERSFIELD NARROW CANAL

Of the three canals which were built across the north of England between Lancashire and Yorkshire, each route's engineers took a different approach to the challenge of crossing the 'backbone of England', the Pennine hills. Perhaps it's best summed up as 'around, over or through' - with the Huddersfield Narrow Canal being the last of these. On the one hand, the mighty 127-mile long route of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal wound its way around the hills south west of Skipton, somehow managing to find a route across the country that never quite hit the 500ft contour. On the other hand, the much shorter Rochdale Canal followed the natural valleys of the Calder and the Roch, climbing to a short summit between them with no need for a tunnel at all. But the Huddersfield Narrow Canal did it the hard way; burrowing under the hills for over three miles between Marsden and Diggle, Standedge Tunnel holds the record for the longest canal tunnel ever built in Britain.
