The Ashby Canal Trust's project to restore the derelict northern reaches of the canal has been awarded £10,000 by the Inland Waterways Association, as the first of four schemes sharing the £100,000 IWA Waterways in Progress Award, The grant takes its name from a report published by IWA, highlighting how canal restoration projects whose timescales may run into decades can deliver benefits right from the start (for example by channelling local regeneration, preserving heritage or helping communities) while not losing sight of the long-term objective of opening the canal - indeed, these short-term gains can help build partnerships which keep things moving forward. The grants are therefore specifically for projects which facilitate wider benefits in the short term, to bring in support for full reopening in due course.
