LIFE ON THE MONTY

We've reviewed a couple of cinema films recently, but this one is different, lt'sa20-minute video commissioned by the Canal & River Trust, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, that's free to view on the CRT website and tells the story of the Montgomery Canal, its history, its geography and its restoration so far. Following the route southwards from Frankton Locks (where we meet the lock keeper who began as a volunteer), the video covers the volunteer restoration work at Frankton and Aston locks and the ongoing channel relining at Crickheath, with footage of several generations of Shropshire Union Canal Society and Waterway Recovery Group volunteers, The horse-drawn trip-boat based at Maesbury provides an opportunity for canal history writer Tony Lewery to explain about horse-boatingand life afloat for the working boatfamilies, while a CRT ecologist covers the canal's rare flora and fauna and the work being done to create offline reserves to preserve them.
