Finding a gardening project is something of a challenge at this time of year. If you have the luxury of a greenhouse or some indoor space with good light and a bit of heat then there are some seeds that can be planted now, for example chillies which need a long growing season to produce a good healthy crop - but for those of us living on our boats this is not an option.Since gardening outside is at a standstill for a while, there may be a few of us with the need to grow something and it may require us to be a little experimental. I have just planted up a pot of turmeric rhizomes purchased from my local supermarket. Turmeric is one of the trendy super foods at the moment and seems to be good for everything from colds to dementia, I have grown ginger in the past and although I did not manage the most bountiful of crops, it was fun. Plant the turmeric rhizomes with any visible shoot buds facing upwards, a couple of inches deep in a 12-inch flowerpot with good quality compost; keep it warm and wateredbecause, like ginger, turmeric grows in warm humid climates. It will take eight to ten months until there will be anything like a crop to gather but in the meantime you will have an interesting talking point and you may be lucky enough to get it to flower.
