White diesel problems 'insurmountable'

The problems resulting from boats having to switch from using red diesel to white (road) diesel in line with a European court's ruling would be 'insurmountable', in the words of a joint statement by four national organisations representing boating and the marine industry.As we reported last month, the European Court of Justice has decided that it is illegal for the UK to continue to allow leisure boaters to use red (lower duty) fuel, even if (as at present) they self-declare and pay the higher duty on the proportion of the fuel which is usedfor propulsion (and the lower rate only on that used for heating or other uses). This will apply for as long as the UK is remains subject to a 1995 EU directive on fuel duty.
