Robin Higgs, a stalwart of both the canal and railway restoration movements for over half a century, has died, Working in the Chobham family nursery business, in 1968 he joined the committee of the then Surrey & Hampshire Canal Society, which had been formed with the aim of restoring the derelict Basingstoke Canal, He became Chairman during the restoration which culminated in the 1991 reopening from the River Wey to Grey well Tunnel, and remained an honorary vice president of what is now the Basingstoke Canal Society for the rest of his life.
