For sometime, I have been making our own firelighters for our stove on board Wand'ring Bark. Andy has always favoured using some sort of firelighter because, frankly, it makes life much easier. The shop-bought ones never smell too good thanks to the liberal use of paraffin so when friend and fellow boater Barry Sharland posted a recipe for homemade ones on Facebook I was fired up with enthusiasm (pun intended!). Barry knows a thing or two about fire, given that he's a former firefighter, so I reckoned his advice was worth following. To make these you'll need egg boxes, sawdust, and wax (old candles are perfect). It can be a bit messy so I recommend the liberal use of newspaper prior to mixing these otherwise you'll spend a long time scraping off hardened wax from the work surfaces (I have no experience of this. Absolutely none. Oh no, I'm just surmising...).
