Ramlin Rose Revisited

At some time over the ten years since its publication, many Canal Boat readers will have enjoyed Sheila Stewart's book Ramlin Rose, a fictionalised account of working boatwomen's lives based on her talks with them. There is now an opportunity to re-visit the main character's experiences in the shape of a one-woman show, and if you're lucky enough to catch one of the two-part performances, a 'second half featuring music and song inspired by the inland waterways. Kate Saffin (Roundham Lock Theatre) supplies the drama, assuming all the parts: Rose; her husband Syer; daughter Jinny and an astonishing number of others. Musician Tim Christian, who used to perform in small medieval music groups, plays a variety of folk instruments including accordion, bodhran (Irish drum), psaltery and portative organ; his partner Jane Rouse lends her beautiful voice to the very different moods of life on the Cut which the audience has seen reflected in incidents taken from the novel.
