When Coal was King

The Aire & Calder Navigation is a name synonymous with the carrying of coal, although its initial conception was to facilitate the transportation of wool and textiles. Back in the 17th Century, the mill owners in the West Riding of Yorkshire wanted a more efficient mode of transport for their produce, Leeds and Wakefield were the centre for textiles and therefore their local rivers the Aire and the Calder were improved for navigation to link up with the Ouse and Number.
