摘要

The Wey & Arun Canal Trust's plans to reopen the entire through route from the Thames to the South Coast moved a stage closer to completion on 31st May, when the brand-new Drungewick Aqueduct over the River Lox was officially opened by Dave Fletcher, former chief executive of British Waterways. The original three-arch brick-built aqueduct dating from 1817 was damaged by floods in 1952, and the remains demolished in 1957. To avoid any repeat of the flood damage - and to satisfy the Environment Agency requirements for coping with excess water - the new aqueduct has been built as a modern single-span concrete trough, allowing a much larger flow under it.
