International shipments help maintain Canadian rail freight increases

Canadian railways carried 27.4 million tonnes of freight in November, a 0.8% rise from November 2011 and the third consecutive year-over-year increase for the month. The gain occurred almost entirely on the strength of international rail traffic shipments.rnWithin Canada, combined loadings of intermodal traffic (i.e., freight moved via containers and trailers on flat cars) and non-intermodal traffic (i.e., freight moved via box cars or loaded in bulk) decreased 0.4% to 24.2 million tonnes. The drop in domestic loadings was the result of reduced loadings of non-intermodal traffic, which offset the gains in intermodal traffic.
