Optimizing traffic signals is a concern for most modern cities, and it is important for the management of traffic flow, energy consumption, air pollution, and safety. The amount of research in this field is considerable, yet traffic congestion across the world persists. This implies the complexity of the problem and a deficit of applied techniques to efficiently manage urban traffic. One of the most controversial topics is the proposal of real-time traffic control to optimally time signals in large urban networks.
