For years, I dreamed of Yosemite. Not the Yosemite of my youth, where I rode crowded buses around the valley, where the meadows crawled with amateur photographers, where the trails were pedestrian highways, and where the bears were so tame they nearly spoke English. I dreamed instead of standing alone beneath the giant slabs. Or of peering down from the rim and hearing only the creak of a fir, the gentle tumble of loose stones, the breath of a breeze blowing through the valley. Of seeing the park in its naked glory. I wanted to see the real Yosemite. John Muir's Yosemite.
