Winter time finds mature bluefin tuna gathering offshore of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, in a stretch of open ocean so treacherous it rightfully bears the name "Graveyard of the Atlantic." Plying these stormy seas on a February day in 1997, two surgical teams in small research vessels accompanied by a flotilla of tuna-fishing boats, spend another grueling day in a six-week mission to tag 180 northern bluefins.
