Phone Companies Ring In Another Quarter Of DSL Gains

The top four RBOCs added more than 1.1 mil. new DSL subs in the quarter, benefiting from the continuous migration of dialup customers to broadband networks. But the rate of sub growth has slowed from the record levels of a year ago, especially for Verizon Comm., as price increases instituted by the telco on its lowest-tier service have dampened demand. By YE '06, the top four RBOCs served almost 21.3 mil. DSL customers, up 40% from YE '05. Although net adds remained relatively stable on a sequential basis, compared to 04 '05 they are down 18%. All but Qwest reported declines in the net additions year-over-year.
