A RARE CHANCE FOR ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN PROGRESS

Although the U. S.-led cam-paign against terrorism is just beginning, it could change the face of the Middle East. Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq could become a U. S. target. Iran has made intriguing gestures toward the West. But the most important shift could well be in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Since the intifada began a year ago, the U.S. has its best chance yet to push for a solution to the Palestinian prob-lem, as well as damp down the extremism it fuels throughout the Middle East.
