With the recession attacking on so many fronts, diversification is again proving an advantage for some global conglomerates. True, sprawling companies such as General Electric have suffered criticism for being in unrelated businesses like financial services and broadcasting. But focused conglomerates such as United Technologies, 3M, ITT (a slimmed-down version of the 1960s group), and Germany's Siemens are moving to take advantage of the economy's fundamental reset.rnThese groups are big in infrastructure, green technologies, or defense - areas where governments are spending to rev up the economy. Government largesse means "a nice big boost," says Nicholas P. Heymann, an analyst with investment firm Sterne Agee. The conglomerates also reap the benefits of a deep management bench and related manufacturing businesses, notes Edward E. Lawler, a business professor at the University of Southern California.
