We live in a time of unprecedented change. Even as fiscal issues in Europe and the election cycle in America dominate the headlines, emerging-market countries like China, Brazil and Indonesia continue to gain momentum. How can investors gain perspective on these great global shifts? And, more important, what are investors supposed to do about them? For insight, we turned to Ian Bremmer, one of the most highly regarded thinkers on global trends, and President of Eurasia Group, a leading consultancy on geopolitical risk; and Lisa Shalett, CIO for Merrill Lynch Global Wealth Management. Most of us are familiar with the Group of Seven Industrialized Nations, and its offspring, the G-8 and G-20. What is the G-Zero world? Ian Bremmer: It's a world without global leadership. The G-20 can't get anything done. Politically and economically, the countries are fundamentally different. The U.S. is unwilling to play the same level of leadership role that it has historically. The Eurozone is caught up in crisis. Japan has had 17 prime ministers in 22 years. You put those things together, and it's not a G-7 or a G-8, or a G-20. The reality is that today we are in a G-Zero world.
