I keep looking for killer business models built around location-based services, simply because so many companies are throwing money into technologies that tell the network where you are. One thing I can never figure out, though: How will any of them turn a profit? f Unfortunately, many of the pitches focus on location-based advertising: You're walking past a Starbucks and your phone beeps with a message: Come inside for a cut-rate latte! We need ads on our cell phones like we need pop-up ads on sidewalks, f But recently I found a company that has a better idea. Boston-based Newbury Networks combines location-finding technology with access control. That means its software can locate wireless devices on a Wi-Fi network, and then enable―or, more interesting, disable―services based on location.
