London's peak bus requirement is back to the level last seen in April 1958, London's transport commissioner, Peter Hendy, told the London Omnibus Traction Society in January. Buses are carrying 6million passengers a day — the figure is still growing — and now have 50% of the public transport market. Around 37% of all journeys made in London are by public transport, a 4% increase on the level in 2000. LOTS itself says that the weekday peak vehicle requirement at the end of January was for 7,037 buses, against 7,032 in April 1958.
