I have Always Been Fascinated by Hong Kong. I think it was inspired originally by a 1970s BBC television documentary series called The Hong Kong Beat, which followed the fortunes or otherwise of the Royal Hong Kong Police. I visited what was still a British colony in 1991 and have been back three times since, most recently in 2008. In that time, some of the raw energy that once permeated everything the territory's Chinese residents did has diminished, as has the defiant siege mentality that existed before unification with mainland China. It is unusual now to see people sleeping on the buses as they travel between jobs, but despite a slowing in the economy in recent years, Hong Kong remains animated and vibrant.
