RT1 the 'provincial' connection

The campaign to keep trend-setting 1939 London Transport prototype double-decker RT1 in Britain has entered its final push. Buses readers' generosity has helped raise ￡142,000 in donations and pledges for the appeal. 'This is a significant milestone to have reached in the first nine months of the appeal,' says Cobham Bus Museum trustee Michael Wickham. Money has also come from Cobham members, the general public and in large sums from individual donors. Further good news is that RT1's current owner, Michael Selt, has agreed to sell the bus to Cobham for a fixed price of ￡150,000, provided it can raise the remaining ￡8,000 by 31 March. The museum has made a down payment for the bus, which it wants to make part of its permanent collection. But the sale could still fall through without the remaining ￡8,000.
