An item on yellow paper in a timetable display in Croydon caught my eye. On Sunday 14 August buses on the X26 (Croydon-Heathrow) would run non-stop between Maiden and Hatton Cross, bypassing Kingston and Teddington. That omitted a considerable part of the route, all because the massive London-Surrey Cycle Classic was being held. That ran from - and back to - London through the south-west as far as Dorking and was designed to replicate the 2012 Olympic Cycle Road Race route. I spotted that notice the previous Sunday but it was not until three days before the event that Transport for London issued a general press release urging 'check before you travel'. Ignoring the area around Guildford and Dorking, in TfL's area around 70 bus routes were curtailed between 04.00 and 15.00 and 12 were withdrawn altogether, taking 125 buses off the road.
