England transport minister Norman Baker has written to Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson, asking him to think carefully before proceeding with a plan to suspend the operation of all the city's bus lanes. Anderson, the Labour Mayor, says bus lanes are not increasing the number of passengers using buses and are unpopular with motorists fined when caught driving in them. Despite protests from bus and taxi operators, he intends to suspend operation of all 24 lanes for a nine-month trial starting 21 October.
