Sorry stalemate on the Cote d'Azur

I am indebted to regular correspondent and erstwhile resident of the Cote d'Azur, Clive d'Eath for some comments on my, admittedly knee-jerk, analysis of buses in the area (Service Extra, August). He draws attention to the topographical difficulties of upgrading the local transport network. He partly agrees about the overcrowding effect of the €1 fare and advises that the TAM network increased ridership by 30% as a result of it. But, he says, the previous fare was already cheap, and so are the trains, which are faster than the buses (our experience of those was that they were equally overwhelmed).
