New Automatic Identification System (AIS) technologies

AIS was originally developed to contribute to safety and to the management of the maritime traffic in areas where there are high levels of activity. The use of AIS in merchant ships, fishing vessels and now in leisure craft has proved its utility as a safety system. Alongside radar, this system has made a contribution to the prevention of collisions at sea. More recently, its utility has also been demonstrated thanks to the development of AIS transponders suitable for use on marine aids to navigation (AIS AtoN).
