The Bell Rock Lighthouse, the Stevensons and emerging issues in aids to navigation

Along with a number of Northern Lighthouse Board and General Lighthouse Authority colleagues past and present, I was fortunate to attend the Bell Rock Conference hosted by the Royal Society of Edinburgh on 4th February 2011, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the light being commissioned. Much effort had gone into the planning of the conference and we were rewarded with a succession of excellent presentations, covering historical, technical and people aspects of lighthouse development. The conference was introduced by Lord Wilson of Tilllyorn, President of RSE and formally opened by NLB's patron, HRH the Princess Royal, who paid tribute to the oldest rock lighthouse in the world in continuous operation. The Board's Chairman, Sir Andrew Cubie, then introduced the role of the Northern Lighthouse Board.%Peter Douglas, du Northern Lighthouse Board, commente les célébrations organisées à la Société royale d'Edimbourg le 4 février 2011 à l'occasion du bicentenaire du phare de Bell Rock.
