Chemical fertiliser shipper Yara is teaming up with fellow Norwegian company Kongsberg Maritime to develop what is claimed to be the world's first autonomous, fully battery electric and ballast-free container ship. Yara exports around 20,000 containers a year, and the scheme is thus aimed at eliminating 40,000 truck journeys annually. Instead, containers will be delivered coastwise by the 120 TEU-capacity yara birkeland from Yara's production plant in Porsgrunn to Brevik (11 km by road) and/or Larvik (30 km) for transhipment to feeder and shortsea vessels.
