Global economic growth, expanding populations, and rising demand for food have fuelled a nine-fold increase in agricultural exports to 1.66 Bt since 1990, according to United Nations statistics. Meanwhile, the world consumption of fertilisers -nitrogen, phosphate and potash - has grown by 40% to 200 Mtpa.
