With 212 Bt in untapped coal reserves, Botswana has the potential to supply both thermal and coking coal to markets around the world. However, the country's faltering coal development plans have received more bad news, as the government has announced that it intends to end the development of new coal-fired generating capacity within five years. Under the long-awaited Integrated Resource Plan drawn up by the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security (MMGE), 300 MW of new coal capacity will be added by 2026 but no new coal plants will be built thereafter. Beyond that date, most new capacity will be provided by solar PV and coal bed methane, with smaller amounts of wind power and concentrated solar power.
